Lesson 39: The Law of Chastity

Original Note from Michelle:
"I found it difficult to plan this lesson.  I think different children will need different amounts of information here.  For my own sons I included only a short discussion of purity and chastity during last week's lessons.  Older children may be ready for more discussion.  Prayerfully use your best judgment.

Suggested song: CS: The Lord Gave Me a Temple p, 153 "

From the Manual:
"This chapter includes some parts that are beyond the maturity of young children.  It is best to wait until children are old enough to understand sexual relations and procreation before teaching them these parts of the chapter"

I am in agreement with Michelle, and with the advice in the manual.  Note that there is more in the "Note to Parents" section of the manual that you may find useful - but I could not see making lessons for "Young Children" with this chapter.

I have, however found some Friend Articles on the related topic of Modesty that would be useful for a light week of lessons if you wish.  I do find that these articles are more directed towards girls than boys, which is a shame as modesty is important for all.

  1. Well, we did the first week's lessons this week and I think it went pretty well. The lessons are possibly a little over the head of my 5 year old, but he'll probably still absorb some things. I think I feel particularly drawn to these lessons this year as my oldest will be baptized in October. I love the idea of her having a better grasp on the Gospel by that time. How have your kids been doing at absorbing the material? I think maybe I need to be better at having discussion throughout the lessons instead of me just reading the material.

  2. Oh, I'm sure that your 5yo will absorb some things. Children that young often understand more than they can express. I had my children draw a picture after the week 1 lessons, and then tell me a little to write. My 3 year old drew a picture of Heavenly Father and Jesus (with a lot of scribbles to) and told me to write "Heavenly Father made the Earth". Now she is a girl, very verbal, and has 2 older siblings to emulate, so even without something like that, I'm sure your 5yo son has learned a lot.

I don't do a lot of discussion in the lessons - I do often ask the questions that are in the lessons, but I don't often get much response from them. I sometimes clarify something, or make a comment - but at the same time, I don't want to get in between them and the lesson...

I think this will be fantastic preparation for your 7 year old's future baptism. I've been pleased so far.

btw - Now that I'm (just) finished the first go through the lessons, I'm hoping to add a bit. I'm adding in notes where a Faith In God Activity would fit in well, and I'm considering adding in links to the various resources in each lesson. I'll have to see how time goes.
